Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Rarity Guide

Yu-Gi-Oh! has one of the deepest rarity systems of any trading card game — more than two decades of sets have introduced dozens of print treatments. Here's the core ladder you'll see most often, roughly from most to least common:

• Common (C): plain print, no foil.
• Uncommon/Rare (R): foil card name, artwork stays flat.
• Super Rare (SR): the whole artwork is foil.
• Ultra Rare (UR): foil artwork and foil card name.
• Secret Rare (SEC): a rainbow/pharaoh's-tomb style foil pattern across the whole card — usually reserved for a set's most sought-after cards.
• Ghost Rare, Starlight Rare, Collector's Rare and more: premium treatments used sparingly in specific sets, often the chase cards of that release.

Why the same card can appear at different rarities

Unlike some other TCGs, Yu-Gi-Oh! frequently reprints the exact same card at a different rarity in a later set — a card that was Ultra Rare on its first release might show up as a Common in a structure deck a year later. That's why our Yu-Gi-Oh! singles page lists each printing separately with its own set, rarity, and price: the artwork and text are identical, but the specific print you're holding determines what it's worth.

What to check before buying or selling

Two details matter most when identifying a specific print: the set code printed in the bottom-right corner (e.g. OP16-001) tells you exactly which set and print run a card is from, and the rarity tells you the foil treatment. Together, those two details are enough to know precisely what you're looking at — card name alone isn't enough.
